Dear Minister Blair;

Today I write to you in regard to possible change to the classification of firearms and statements that have been made by Government officials with regard to a federal gun buy back.

The Government is not in the business of selling firearms, so I wonder how you plan to “buy back” something you never sold in the first place? I also wonder what your plan is to address the illegally owned handguns so frequently used by gangsters in the commission of other crimes. As you no doubt heard your successor at Toronto Police Service, Chief Mark Saunders has recently made statements that indicate criminals in Toronto are most frequently in possession of illegal hand guns that have been smuggled into Canada. How do you plan to buy those back?

Perhaps your efforts would be better spent on addressing the rising rates of violent crime in Canada, our high rates of recidivism, or our porous boarders through which so many illegal items are smuggled. Perhaps instead of targeting licensed firearms owners you might approach the difficult task of creating Real Change that the Liberal Party was so found of during the 2015 election? That fondness for change seems to have evaporated in favour of making easy targets of licensed firearms owners, as if 2.2 million Canadians with licensed firearms were a greater threat to public safety than any criminal enterprise in this country.

Perhaps my voice is not worth your time, or perhaps you might do the difficult work you were elected to do. Perhaps a sound bit about doing something, anything, is easier and more satisfying for our Government than actually keeping Canadians safe.

Sincerely,

Dear Minister Blair;

I fear my previous letters on the subject of a possible gun ban, or buy back program by the Liberal government may have been too nuanced and verbose. To be clear; Canadians do not support the confiscation of our property via Orders In Council. Canadians do no support targeting law-abiding citizens while ignoring the criminal elements that bring violence to our cities. Canadians do no support a dictatorship that governs by decree rather than through our parliamentary processes. 2.2 millions legal Canadians own firearms and have done nothing to deserve to have their legally owned firearms forcibly removed based on catchy sound bites or scary photos. Canadians do not support the government’s apathy in enforcing policies that target actual criminals, and would bring about real change and safer communities.

Taking every legal gun from ever licensed owner will stop exactly zero criminals from using their illegal handguns, smuggled in to Canada, in the commission of their other crimes.

Canadians deserve better, and we expect you to set a better example.

Sincerely,

Dear Minister Blair;

I am writing to you to urge you to consider following our established democratic parliamentary process. As a legal, licensed firearms owner for over 10 years I have never harmed anyone, nor have the vast majority of Firearms Possession and Acquisition License holders. As you well know PAL holders are subject to daily Continuous Eligibility Screening. PAL holders are subject to more scrutiny than convicted sex offenders, parolees, or police officers. PAL holders are also statistically the safest, least violent, and least criminally inclined Canadians. The data from Statistics Canada and the RCMP show these facts to be true.

For your government to want use heavy-handed policies via Orders In Council to strip these upstanding Canadians of their privately held property is an affront to both common sense and the rule of law. Prohibiting PAL holders from continuing to own the same semi-automatic rifles we have responsibly used for decades , does nothing to further public safety, and it circumvents the democratic process and discussions of our elected representatives in the House. The governments proposed plan to use Orders in Council to strip law-abiding Canadian’s of their property is unconscionable. You need to take a sober second look at producing real meaningful policy and put less effort into pandering to scared voters in Toronto and Montreal that are fearful of the drug dealers and gangsters using illegal guns to terrorize their cities.

Sincerely,

Dear Minister Blair;

I am writing to you to express my deep concern with actions your government is taking to unfairly target lawful gun owners. Your proposed “solution” ban legally acquired firearms from lawful owners and implement a buy back program is insulting to millions of law-abiding Canadian voters. The proposal to ban “assault weapons” in nonsensical and I expect that as a former police chief you know that the Firearms Act already prohibits Canadians from acquiring fully automatic machine guns. The idea of banning certain semi-automatic firearms based on their appearance should be repugnant to anyone that has a modicum of sense. Your time and effort would be much better spent combating actual criminals that use illegally possessed and often smuggled pistols while committing other crimes in urban centres. Canadians expect better of you then this pandering rhetoric and the appearance of doing something while not accomplishing the goal of making any Canadian safer from common criminals toting illicit handguns.

Sincerely,
