Book Club
December Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury
- Set in 2052, though earlier editions of the book were set earlier
- In early editions of the book, Montag says, “We’ve started and won two atomic wars since 1960”, in the first pages of The Sieve and the Sand. This sets a lower bound on the time setting. In later decades, some editions have changed this year to 1990 or 2022.
- As people began to embrace new media of film, television, and, sports, the pace of life quickens, new faster thrills are needed and more of society is medicated.
- Televisions fill whole walls or rooms in homes
- The parlour “family” replaces real meaningful action by including the watcher in the story and substituting their name or asking them to take on a role. The television stories have no real substance are mostly commercials for products
- Over time books were ruthlessly abridged or degraded to accommodate short attention spans while minority groups protested the controversial, outdated content they perceived in literature
- Advances in technology resulted in nearly all buildings being made out of fireproof materials, and the traditional role of firemen in preventing fires was no longer necessary. The government instead turned the firemen into officers of society’s peace of mind: instead of putting out fires they became responsible for starting them, specifically for the purpose of burning books, which were condemned as sources of confusing and depressing thoughts that only complicated people’s lives
