COMMENTARY: A DAY AT THE RANGE
One of the great pleasures of firearm ownership is our role in educating people on the issues affecting our community.
It is a delight we treasure when we see someone come to understand why our community feels so constantly under attack.
It’s even better when actions are tied to words.
Team CSSA was entrusted to fulfill this role with one of the leading contenders in the CPC leadership race – Kevin O’Leary.
Like many others, Mr. O’Leary reached out for some wisdom and guidance through the perilous minefield of Canada’s firearm laws and policies.
Mr O’Leary and his policy team met CSSA Executive Director Tony Bernardo and senior CSSA Provincial Instructor John Baker at Oshawa’s Marksmen Club. John is also the President of this great facility.
The longer than expected meeting resolved some policy issues and certainly educated Mr. O’Leary and his staff on some of the more onerous aspects of the Firearms Act.
Mr. O’Leary said he had tried to read the Act. “It is 144 pages of incomprehensible gibberish” he stated. “If I am elected, I will repeal the entire Firearms Act and replace it with sensible laws Canadians can understand.”
Mr. O’Leary admitted he had made some erroneous comments regarding AR15s but has since changed his position on these firearms. “The AR15 is just a rifle, one of the most common hunting firearms in the world. The unjust restrictions on these ordinary firearms will be changed to permit them to be used for hunting,” said O’Leary.
He also spoke out strongly against the UN Marking Regulations stating, “This is ridiculous. Everything we need to trace firearms is already contained in the serial number and other information on the firearm.”
Mr. O’Leary and his staff have pledged to work with members of our community going forward to effect these positive changes. The CSSA appreciates the time Mr. O’Leary and his staff spent learning about our issues, and we thank him for his support to our community.

Good Day, Brothers:
Several points:
I have had a fairly long “association” with current Canadian military history.
My grandfather joined the Canadian Army in 1939 and left in 1948.
My father joined the army in 1954 and retired in 1979.
I joined in 1978 and was released in 1981.
I have no direct political memories before the 1972 election, which Pierre Trudeau won. In the 1974 election Trudeau had fairly broad support in the (then fairly new) Canadian Forces.
The unification (begun under Lester Pearson) had some pretty major “teething pains”. By 1974 there was (according to my Father) fairly high hopes that the fortunes of the military would be on the rise again.
Instead, it was the beginning of the “Liberal Decade Of Darkness” that Rick Hillier mentioned.
My Father was in the Signals Corps, and there were years that non-combat arms trades (like his) were unable to fire their annual qualifications because there was no ammo.
Yup, not enough ammo to shoot ONCE A YEAR!
In the late 70’s and early 80’s it was still happening. I was an infantryman, so we were a high priority to still fire our qualifications; but there was very little practice. And blank ammo was exceedingly scarce on exercise.
I was a usually a C2 man, so I yelled “Budda-Budda-Budda! but the C1 guys were encouraged to yell their round-count. And when we reached 20, change mags.
My contacts in the current military tell me that the situation is somewhat improved; but the Conservatives were FAR from the saviours that the military was hoping for. And while I despise (/echo/) Justin Trudeau, the current deficiencies in our military really need to be laid at the feet of the past government.
We really need a culture shift.

I had to break-up my post to it was getting way too long.
The reason that there exists, in the criminal code, prohibitions on doing or consenting to certain things, like duelling, prize fighting or rough sex that leaves lasting marks… Is that our bodies belong to the Crown. And if you want to potentially damage Crown property, you have to pay for the privilege.
The reason that the junior Ju-Jitsu was persecuted is that they didn’t pay for the permit.
It really is that simple.
It is one of my pet peeves. This and civil forfeiture. We need property rights that include the rights to our own bodies.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for representing my libertarian, pro gun views! I am a new subscriber. It is reassuring that there are more likeminded people out there who believe Trudeau needs to get the fuck out of our helicopter. Keep up the fantastic work!
Regards,
Ryan
