This week Rachel, Tyler, Marty, Gavin and Andrew get together to talk about Emergency Supplies to keep in your vehicle as we get ready for a Canadian winter. We get bogged down in the news talking about canoes being cultural appropriation, as well as originally being stolen from the Dutch. The panel also gets off topic and discusses disenfranchising voters, in addition to the government imposing gender quotas on private businesses, and taxpayers funding erectile dysfunction medication for Toronto employees. We also address a lengthy piece of listener feedback.

Hello there!
I recently stumbled across your podcast and, after listening to a few episodes, decided to write in. It is always a wonderful thing to see fellow Canadians creating excellent content, especially when those same Canadians are giving a perspective on the world that is often unique.
There were a few instances of things said during the past couple of episodes that have left me with a bit of a sour taste however. I will give a few specific examples but generally they can all be boiled down to the following pattern:
- A) I’m a conservative Canadian
- B) Everything the Liberals and other ‘lefties’ do is wrong
- C) Therefore I’ll complain about them at every chance, but most especially for doing the same stupid things that the Conservatives did previously but didn’t get away with as much (because it’s just not fair!)
This pattern truly puzzles me for a number of reasons. It’s perfectly fine to support one political party over another if they most closely align with your views at the time, heck I’ve voted for each of the main three in the past for various reasons, but only a sheep agrees 100% with any particular party at the exclusion of all others.
It seems silly to me to moan about the Liberals ‘getting away’ with more than the Conservatives were able to when they did the same thing previously. Instead shouldn’t we be demanding more from all of our politicians rather than framing it as ‘OK for my guy but not theirs’?
Similarly when the issue of the Liberal proposed carbon tax came up, a tax that I also agree is probably not the best approach to fighting carbon emissions, the panel instead regressed to fighting over whether or not man made climate change is real while parroting various Conservative party sound bites on the matter. For a group that seems most irked when ‘progressives’ repeat what the Liberal, NDP or ‘left-wing media’ outlets say you sure don’t mind doing the same for ‘your’ party or ‘right-wing media’ outlets like Rebel. Pot calling the kettle black much?
It is also legitimately scary that a group of otherwise seemingly well educated and very intelligent individuals would disregard the worldwide scientific consensus on man made climate change and instead opt to follow the talking points of those who aren’t at all qualified but happen to share their political ideology? but I guess what do the people who have studied it know right? They’re only ‘elite, liberal, [insert insult here], egghead’ scientists. I mean when I’m not feeling well and go to my doctor and he tells me something that doesn’t fit my political ideology I just try the next 90-some doctors until I find the one that does agree. That’s how science works right?
Before leaving that topic even if man made climate change is not a real thing, which again it very much is, the panel seemed to at least agree that climate change of some sort was happening. If any of the world’s premier security and defence officials are to be believed then this represents not only an environmental, health care, economic and political issue but also one of national security as well. Surely we could all agree that doing something, even the little bit that our country alone could do, to try and offset the related downsides would be a good thing no?
All that said I hope you don’t consider this hate mail ? it isn’t meant to be. Also don’t think for a minute that I’m some lefty writing in because you’ve insulted me ? I’m not and you haven’t; if anything I’m a socially liberal (as in stay out of my personal life), financially conservative (as in stop spending my money on stupid stuff), independent. I guess you could think of me like a libertarian without the whole “I’m going to let your house burn down because you didn’t buy my shiny fire medallion” crazy streak.
I look forward to hearing new episodes from you and your panel’s unique perspectives every week!
