This week Andrew, Tim, Gavin, and Marty talk about Lindsey Shepard. Ms Shepard has been the subject of months long happenings at Wilfrid Laurier University after using her position as a Teaching Assistant in Communication Studies 101 to show a clip of Jordan Peterson debating the use of gender neutral pronouns. CPP also anounces a give away from Matador Arms. Andrew had to bust ot the tape deck again as we have a new cassette from Earl.

Lindsey Shepard
Background
One of the research paper topics that students from Communication Studies 101 at Wilfrid Laurier University can choose to write about this semester is communication bubbles. Communication bubbles refer to the phenomenon of people becoming entrapped in ideological echo chambers as a result of only seeking out, or being fed, news that confirms their existing beliefs.
Lindsey Shepard is a Teaching Assistant for Communication Studies 101 at Wilfrid Laurier University, on November 1 she showed a portion of TVO’s “The Agenda” to her class. Jordan Peterson, a psychology professor at university of Toronto, was in the video arguing against being forced to use gender neutral pronouns.
On November 8, Shepherd was called into a meeting with two professors ? Nathan Rambukkana and Herbert Pimlott ? and a diversity and equity official with the university, Adria Joel, after a complaint was allegedly made about her tutorial. Shepherd recorded the meeting, where she was reprimanded for showing the video. Ramukkana said that it was impossible to neutrally present a position on gender pronouns; “This is like neutrally playing a speech by Hitler”.
In a letter dated December 4, and sent to Shepherd’s lawyer Howard Levitt, from the Laurier-hired lawyer Robert Centa, reads: “You asked for a copy of the complaint or complaints filed against your client. At this point in my investigation, I do not believe there is a document that contains a ‘complaint’ made about Ms. Shepherd nor is there anything I would describe as a formal complaint under any WLU policy,” wrote Centa
After a recording of Shepherd’s meeting was made public, both Laurier President Deborah MacLatchy and Rambukkana issued a public apology to her.
MacLatchy’s statement read “The conversation I heard does not reflect the values and practices to which Laurier aspires ? I am sorry it occurred in the way that it did and I regret the impact it had on Lindsay Shepherd.”
Rambukkana also apologized for meeting with Shepherd in the company of two other colleagues, responding to criticism that such a set-up demonstrated a power imbalance.
Shepard, who sees herself as left wing, had thought about a career in academia but in an email to The Record she wrote “if this trend continues of radical leftist indoctrination, I’m not really interested in being a part of that,”

Discussion items
- 1.5x theater? Andrew has a clip of the meeting
- Shepherd sees herself as left-wing, but noticed to her dismay that news media on the right-wing side of the spectrum (such as Rebel Media, the Toronto Sun and the National Post) were keenly interested in championing her case. The left-of-centre media seemed less interested.
- Shepherd has been the target of criticism such as being accused of “canny deployment of White Lady Tears,” as University of Waterloo English professor Aimée Morrison
- Free speech on campus has been used as a tool in a “culture war” on campuses that has been used to “say really cruel, hurtful, harmful things” about black, Indigenous and trans people at university, said Rinaldo Walcott, professor at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, during a debate on the public affairs TV show “The Agenda.” “Some forms of speech are intolerable,” said Walcott, who is black
- Is this about academic freedom, or freedom of speech?
- Sheppard was told that playing the TVO clip was tantamount to violence, and that she had created a toxic climate and unsafe learning environment.
I was also told that I had violated everything from the university’s Gendered Violence and Sexual Assault Policy to the Ontario Human Rights Code to Bill C-16.

Hey Andrew,
A little behind on episodes. Listening to LODP 88-3 where you were a guest on there. Loving the crossover episodes between two of the three podcasts I actually listen to!
Yup, sks will work for a truck gun.
But before you do, consider the Troy PAR national in .223. Holding your laughter, consider this. They are about 1000 used on CGN. Awesome quality barrels, and takes AR mags. CTCS has nice polymer 10 rounders. Light, reliable, quality builds. Ergonomics you are very familiar with. Folds down to minimum legal length. Far more accurate than the ‘ minute of man’ of the sks. Faster reloads and a much easier carry if you have to walk it home.
Just a thought.
